Mexican Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned has been around since the 1800’s, when it began making rounds in spirits publications. Gaining some popularity from bourbon enthusiasts, the drink is widely enjoyed today and considered a staple at bars around the world. The basic playbook for creating an old fashioned, regardless of any variety that branches from it, centers on spirits, water, sugar, and bitters. Those ingredients together comprise the components of this classic cocktail.

The key difference in this recipe, our signature Mexican Old Fashioned, is the use of mezcal, rather than the traditional bourbon whiskey. While bourbon whiskey provides a unique experience through its rich flavor, the extraordinary taste that comes from mezcal can’t be ignored.

What is not commonly known is that mezcal, much like its tequila brother, comes in an assortment of varieties. This is due to the assortment of agave plants that can be used to produce mezcal. Our preferred mezcal comes from the tobala variety, which is far more aromatic than most others. While a more traditional espadin mezcal will certainly suffice, tobala provides a complex assortment of flavors along with its signature smoky zest.

While mezcal has been around for some time, using it in an old fashioned gives this classic cocktail a whole new feel. The rich, smoky flavor that comes with it make it an irresistible choice for fans of the original, as well as for those looking to try a new take on an old favorite. You don’t want to miss out on this unique recipe!

Fortunately, this drink is incredibly easy to prepare, just like the original Old Fashioned. You don’t need a shaker to mix the ingredients. Simply add the ingredients into the glass, stir, and enjoy!

For specific instructions, please see below:

This cocktail requires four tools:

  • glass (preferably a lowball glass)
  • jigger
  • fruit peeler
  • long stirring spoon (even a long teaspoon will do)

  • agave nectar
  • Mezcal (tobala, preferably)
  • angostura bitters
  • maraschino cherry (garnish)
  • orange peel (garnish)

  1. Add one teaspoon of agave nectar
  2. Add 4 dashes of angostura bitters
  3. Mix the above together for a few seconds
  4. Add 2 ounces of mezcal
  5. Stir for a few seconds
  6. Add a large ice cube
  7. Stir for several more seconds, careful to move the ice to get the mixture underneath
  8. Garnish it with an orange peel and maraschino cherry
  9. Enjoy!

We suggest that you try our spicy version of this using ancho Reyes (Chile liquor)! You’ll love it!
